Nursery Redo

For those of you who know me well, know that I get very antsy when it comes to design (which is why I keep changing up my blog design so often. I've got to get the ants out somehow!). I love rearranging furniture, changing out artwork, and repainting. If I had it my way, I would change my home decor and everything else with each changing season. As of now, we have lived in our house for two years and all that has changed are the curtains, the furniture (thanks Mom and Dad!), and the mantle. I am itching to make some changes around here!

As I sit here in the living room, I desperately want to repaint this red wall. Now don't get me wrong, I love my red wall, but it's been red ever since we've moved here and I am over it. But this change won't happen for a while.

The first thing I have permission to change is the nursery. Right now, it's a beautiful yellow. I love the yellow. But I'm tired of it. Can you see that I get tired of things easily? It's the sad truth. The room has been yellow since we've moved in (we painted it with the knowledge that it will eventually be our nursery). So now, I've been scanning Pinterest in hopes of inspiration for Bug's new room.

One thing that will stay the same will be her red crib. I love her red crib. To go with it, we will be repainting her room a light brown color. I don't know the name yet, but once I do, I'll let y'all know. Along with the repainting of her room, we'll be painting her trim white and I'll be making new curtains as well.

The "theme" or direction I'm going with is kind of a woodland theme. I want to base it off of this print:

I love this print.

So the room will be filled with foxes, deer, and all the little woodland creatures you can imagine. I'm excited about the new direction and I can't wait to get started!

This is another print I want to include in her room.

I think it'll be a fun project and mostly, I'm just looking forward to some change in this house!

(And then this red wall is getting painted over! Bring on the grey ;) haha)

Paint, paint, and more paint

I'm one that constantly likes to change and update things in my home. When we first moved in, I knew I wanted to paint the nursery yellow. I love the yellow that is in there. It's such a happy color. It's bright and airy and is just a happy room for my little girl. But I tire of colors very quickly, much to my husbands annoyance. 2 years in this house, and I'm already ready to repaint (let's be honest though, I've been ready to paint after the first year).

The first room we conquered was the bathroom. We did a complete overhaul in there. Right now, we're just waiting on the bead board and baseboards to get installed, and then it'll be finished and I'll update with pictures!

The next two areas on my list of never ending things to do are Bug's room and the master. Currently, the nursery is yellow. Like I said before, I love the yellow. But I think I want to go with something slightly more neutral. A brown of some sort. Maybe the color of warm cinnamon or Martha Stewart's brown sugar.

Martha Stewart's brown sugar                 warm cinnamon

Now are master bedroom is a dark green. I like the color, but I've never been in love with it. There isn't enough natural light in our master bedroom to pull of such a dark color. In an attempt to lighten things up, we're already repainting the trim white. At the moment, it's that ugly 80's stain. The white trim is definitely helping brighten things, but in my opinion, it's not enough. So now I'm thinking of doing a yellow and grey combination. Our new (washable) bedspread is yellow, and I love it. But the green doesn't really go well with it. So now, it's time to paint.

I love these greys, but I did tell the hubs that he could pick out the grey in order to get him on board with the master bath redo.

I don't know if I'll actually get to do these redoes, but a girl can dream right? I'm hoping that when baby #2 is on board, we can redo the nursery to accommodate. I guess I'll just have to wait to see.

Decorating help!

My indecisiveness is in full swing! I need help picking curtains! Sorry if I scared you...but this is a big decision and I need some help!

So here are my choices. I want something light and airy that will highlight my new windows and lighten up our space.

from Target

from Target
Exactly like the one above, but different colors.

from Urban Outfitters (I'd go with the blue)

I love love love these curtains from Urban Outfitters but they only come in 84" length. I want to hang them all the way from the ceiling and we have 8' ceilings. Unless you think that they'll work anyway.

The colors of my living room are red and a khaki color. I personally think that all of these would complement the color scheme we already have going. But I can't make a decision. Or rather, I already had made a decision but I took too long to order the curtains and now they're out of stock!

Our Weekend

This weekend was nasty. It rained - no, it poured - all day Saturday and most of the day Sunday.

So Saturday, it rained all day. As most of you know we're in the process of slowly renovating our house, starting with the master bath. Well, we started renovations last weekend. 3 days the hubby worked 12+ hours on it. And it still wasn't finished. The people who built this house were lazy and nothing was squared or plumbed or built right. Go figure. Anyway, Saturday was going to be the day that the hubs finished the project. His best friend was coming to help. But, as with most projects, things didn't go as planned. The good news is, they got the sheet rock back up and tile on the floor. But the stupid glue still isn't dry. Why, you wonder...Rain. All this ridiculous rain.

So we're still without a working bathroom. We have Bug's bathroom, but she doesn't have a shower - just a bath. So we do have a toilet and sink...but we don't have a shower...

Anyway, this brings us to Sunday. We're getting ready for church (running late as always) and go to put the dog in the basement (he's not allowed to stay upstairs while we're away because he ruins things) when the hubs yells up and informs me the basement has flooded.

Seriously?

Yes. Seriously. So that nixes the idea of the hubs going to church. He now must fix what the rain has gifted us with. Water all throughout the basement.

I've got to keep an eye on it today as well, seeing as the rain has not stopped

Oh well. Here's hoping the rain stops. The tile dries. And the sun comes out. I need a good sunshine-y day. And a good sunshine-y weekend. We need to paint the outside of this house before our windows come in!

Here's a sneak peak of the bathroom with tile :)

Let the Renovations Begin...

We've officially started! Well, if you call buying paint samples and getting them on the siding starting, then we've started.

Here is what our house looked like when we first bought it:

Those bushy things to the right of the picture are no longer there. We ripped them up last year and then we ran out of money...so nothings gone back there. It's still a work in progress. Also note this picture was taken in the winter time, so that's another reason for the dismal look.

Basically our house is an ugly green blob with this pinkish brown trim. I don't like it at all. So now we're painting!

Not the best picture, it's a cloudy/rainy day here.

Left side blue: Behr Mosaic Blue (siding color)
Top: Glidden Sunflower (door color)
Middle on top: Behr Misty Morn (porch color)
Middle on bottom: Glidden Pebble Grey (porch color)
Right side blue: Glidden Rich Navy (siding color)

We didn't pick out a trim color. I want it to match the new windows, which will be white, so we're waiting for those to be installed before we decide.

As of now, we've picked our siding color! We decided to go with the Glidden Rich Navy (but in Behr paint...nothing against Glidden, we just know Behr, so that's what we stick with). We were uncertain at first, the color seemed to be so light! But thankfully, it dried darker and in fact is the perfect color! Just what I was envisioning! The yellow door is also a thumbs up from us. I think it has the perfect pop. It's hard to tell now because I didn't do enough coats to show it's true color, but I know it's going to pop and I love that! I think everyone should have a brightly painted door. To me, it just says "Welcome"!

The hang up is with the color of the porch/deck. We're not going to paint it the same color as the siding, as is the case with the house now. We want something different. I want to go for a lighter shade of blue for a contrast. The hubs wants to go with either a slightly darker grey or a tan. I don't know how I feel about grey. I feel like it would be too dark and not welcoming.  I definitely don't like the idea of tan with a bright yellow door. Those colors just don't seem to go well together in my opinion. So we're going back to the HD to get two more paint samples. One of my choosing, and one of his. I tried compromising with a blue-grey, but he wasn't a fan. I guess we'll just have to see!

What do y'all think? Should we go lighter blue for the contrasting porch? Or should we go a slightly darker grey than what is pictured above?

More on the Paint Front

So I may have jumped the gun with the whole "going brown" thing...I'm leaning toward different colors. We're having a hard time finding something due to the color of our shingles. They're this odd brown color and not the easiest thing to pair another paint color with.

I like this color combo.

I'm really loving this navy blue! In fact, this is what we're leaning towards and as of now our #1 choice! I can't decide though if I want to stay with that awesome yellow or go with an amazing red. Yes, this means I'm sacrificing my TARDIS blue door (I'm having mixed feelings about this).

I like this color as well, and with this color I can still do my TARDIS door!

Does brown go with grey?

Such a hard decision and it has to be the first decision made before the windows get installed. We might  be going to the HD this weekend to get samples. Unfortunately we won't be able to paint with those samples tomorrow because of a certain thing called rain and cold damp weather.

I've started a Pinterest board with all my ideas on it. Hopefully I can get some organization to all these renovation thoughts floating around in my head.

Wish Lists

Summer is here and that means I get to spend countless hours at the house. This brings along plenty of day dreaming, which brings along a wish list of things I would like to do around the house before big changes take place (more on that later on).

On the list:

  • Change all the doors so that they match. Right now we have 4 doors that are the same and 1 that's the odd man out. I like the odd man out and want all the other ones to match.
  • Replace the toilet in the guest bathroom. We, aka the hubs, has done everything he possibly could to fix this stupid toilet. But no matter what, we've replaced everything, it still runs constantly. I'm so tired of jiggling the stupid handle!
  • Move the laundry room to the main floor. I hate, hate having it in the basement. I'm done lugging load after load up and down the stairs. Stupid laundry room in the basement that will probably always remain in the basement.
  • Repaint. Hahaha. The hubs would kill me if I repainted.
  • New front door. Our front door is ugly! I want one with a window in it. Something that will let in some light in that dark corner. Or at least something with a peephole in it. Now whenever someone comes to the door I have to try to peek out the window without being seen. Yeah. It's not fun.
This is just the short list. Will any of it get done? Of course not! That's why I'm calling this a "wish list." Something for me to dream about and play around with, but not something that I ever expect to really get done.

Wednesdays are for dreaming

It's raining cats and dogs outside as I sit here in my closet at work. Perfect weather for staying at home in bed all day. But work calls, so I must answer. Nevertheless, I'm dreaming of being at home with a nice hot cup of tea steaming in one hand and a good book in the other with the window open listening to the rain beating on a tin roof and feeling the cool wind.

Of course, if I were to spend an entire day reading and relaxing in bed, I'd want to change some things up. So inevitably I would be dreaming of how to "better" our room and spruce it up. I've seen so many cute things online that I've caught the "nesting" bug once again [darn you Pinterest]. Really I've caught the "organizing and spring cleaning" bug. If only I could find catch the "energy" and "money" bugs as well. Hopefully I'll get something accomplished today. It's the hubs "long day" for work so I'll have more time to keep myself occupied. I just hope the energy will come. With this rain though, there are no guarantees.

So I'll just dream, and maybe eventually my dreams will become reality.

Untitled #1

master bedroom

Basically I am wanting to add color and texture to my room. Right now it is BO.ring and leaning slightly toward depressing. I'm ready to jazz it up with some fun color and texture [especially that bright floral print pillow. I'm in love!]

27 March 2012

This week.

After this week, I can honestly say that I have earned my spring break. It has been a whirlwind of a week, and it's only Tuesday! I feel like I've been working at least ten days in a row now. Spring break is just around the corner. This is the thought that is getting me through the rest of the week. Only 3 more mornings until freedom.

The plan for this spring break is cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning. How much will I really get done? That's a good question and I'm probably extremely unrealistic, but I plan on cleaning out our closet and chest of drawers and reorganizing everything. {Don't tell the hubs any of these plans in case they don't happen. ;) What he doesn't know won't hurt him and if they do end up happening he'll be pleased.}

We have a very small closet so organization is a must. Currently, we have none.

Simple Organized Living has a great tutorial posted  about how to make do with an "average size master closet." I guarantee you ours is definitely "average size." Or maybe even smaller.

I'll be doing this on a budget so I'm looking for cheap and easy ways to improve our storage. Any tips or ideas? Our biggest ordeal is our shoes. We have no idea what to do with any of them! And there are lots (I'm planning on getting rid of a ton).

I like the idea of storing things under the bed on rolling drawers. The hubs's boots would work nicely under there.

I don't know. I'm at a loss. We also don't have doors on our closet, so everything is out in the open for all eyes to see (not that anyone actually goes into our bedroom but us, but that's not the point). So I might look to adding doors cheaply. Remember I'm on a budget!

What I want for Christmas

Is it too early to be thinking about what I want for Christmas this year? I sure hope it isn't because I'm begging for new bedroom furniture for the master bedroom. The stuff the hubs and I are currently using is the furniture from my teenage bedroom. The drawers are small, falling apart, the drawer pulls don't exist, and did I mention the drawers are small? It takes very precise pushing and shoving to close the drawers, and that's without clothes in them. Basically, I'm just fed up with them. So I'm on the prowl for "new" (to me) furniture. I'm searching thrift stores, Craigslist, and garage sales. Not that we can get them now...This is for Christmas.

I'll take anything with good bones. I'm not afraid of a little makeover.

Of course most of these are way beyond out of my price range, but you get the gist of what I want. I don't care if it matches or not. Really I want more of an eclectic look. We'll see what I end up with though. In reality I'll get whatever is cheapest. But that is life now and I am okay with that. The cheaper it is the better I feel about making it my own.

Dreaming

The hubs and I have spent the past few days dreaming dreams that are very unlikely to ever come true.
But it is fun to dream and I encourage dreaming.
I believe it is good for the soul.

These past few days we have been dreaming about our unfinished basement.
It has to combine a family room, laundry room, and craft room.
We have such grand plans for it, however money (as always) is holding us back.
But like I said, it doesn't hurt to dream.
